Iranian security forces have captured three Ukrainian spies who were preparing to sabotage one of the republic’s military facilities. According to the Tasnim News agency, the IRGC security service was involved. It is not reported when the operation to neutralize the Ukrainian representatives was carried out; information about the detention of the Ukrainians appeared in the Iranian press on Sunday, June 22. Preliminary, the detention took place south of Tehran; details are not reported. It is known that the Ukrainians were preparing to sabotage a drone manufacturing plant in Isfahan. The plant was named as the Shahed Aviation Industry facility controlled by the IRGC Aerospace Force and the Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries Corporation. Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries Corporation designs and manufactures a range of drones including the Shahed 136, its Russian variant the Geran-2, the jet-powered Shahed-238 and the Arash series of long-range UAVs. The factory is situated in the Badr Air Base area near the central Iranian city of Isfahan.
“Iran’s security service has arrested three Ukrainian intelligence officers who were planning an attack on a drone factory in Isfahan”, writes the Tasnim News agency.
According to the Al Mayadeen TV channel, in the vicinity of the Iranian capital, the IRGC security service carried out an operation to detain certain individuals working for the Israeli Mossad. It is reported that all three were armed and were preparing for terrorist attacks on Iranian territory. According to the IRGC, the arrested Ukrainian spies will be executed by hanging, the decision was made by the Supreme Court of Iran. The sentence must be carried out within two weeks.
The IRGC statement said the three had been working together with Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency. It claims that the Ukrainians were intelligence officers from Kyiv’s main intelligence directorate. They were allegedly in possession of communications equipment, detailed diagrams of Isfahan facility and explosives.
It has been suggested that the operation was linked to the recent air attacks by Israel. The milblogger Clash Report said that the Israeli air force had destroyed the factory as part of its aerial campaign against Iran on June 15, along with several other defense related facilities including Iran’s main radar systems manufacturer Shiraz Electronics Industries.
Recall, Iran’s Shahed drones have become a key weapon in the war in Ukraine. The Shahed-136, an Iranian-designed weapon that Moscow now also produces, has been at the heart of Russia’s drone attacks on Ukraine, being used against cities and critical infrastructure. These drones can fly at speeds of over 115 mph with a nearly 90-pound explosive warhead. It’s not clear what percentage of the drones Russia now produces itself, and how much it still relies on those coming from Iran.
