Ukrainians mark Vyshyvanka Day with tradition and solidarity

“For centuries, we have been captivated by its pattern. But now it is our turn to create the pattern ourselves – through our lives, our fight, and every new step we take,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Celebrated on the third Thursday of May, Vyshyvanka Day honors Ukraine’s traditional embroidered shirts, a symbol of identity, unity, and deep cultural heritage rooted in centuries-old traditions.

What began in 2006 as a student initiative has grown into a global expression of solidarity.

In a time of war, its meaning carries even greater weight, as Ukrainians not only preserve tradition but live it, defending their country and shaping their future, one thread at a time.
