The United States has been moving troops from several bases in the Middle East, including in Qatar and Bahrain, amid a possible war with Iran, the New York Times reported. According to the report, the Pentagon has been moving troops stationed in the Middle East bases for undisclosed missions. Hundreds of troops have been moved from the Al Udeid base in Qatar, according to cited Pentagon officials. The report points out that similar military repositioning has taken place at the network of US bases in Bahrain, home to the Navy’s 5th Fleet, as well as at installations across Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates. According to the Times, US officials are concerned that the roughly 30,000 to 40,000 American troops deployed across the Middle East could become primary targets for the Islamic Republic if a full-scale war were to erupt. Pentagon officials cited by the Times said any new confrontation would differ from the June 2025 strike on Al Udeid Air Base, when Iranian authorities reportedly gave Washington advance notice. Iran’s mission to the UN has cautioned that if the United States launches an attack, all regional bases, facilities, and assets belonging to what it calls hostile forces would be treated as legitimate targets. The United States has also opted to keep its two aircraft carriers positioned at a safer distance from the Islamic Republic to reduce their vulnerability. The report concludes that the administration of Donald Trump remains focused on pursuing a diplomatic resolution with Iran, though several officials reportedly regard Tehran’s proposals as insufficient to deter potential military action. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is deploying the USS Gerald R. Ford – the largest warship in the world – to the Middle East, along with a substantial number of aerial refueling tankers and advanced F-22 and F-35 fighter jets. The significant surge in military assets is the clearest sign so far that Donald Trump may be gearing up for extensive strikes on Iran if critical talks over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program and its harsh repression of protesters collapse.
