The United States has seized a Venezuelan-linked crude oil tanker in the Indian Ocean, after tracking it from the Caribbean Sea. The seized vessel is linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” and is in the US sanctions list. The US Department of War posted on X on Monday, stating that US military forces carried out a right-of-visit, maritime interdiction and boarding of the tanker Aquila II in the Indo-Pacific region “without incident.” The captured vessel, the Aquila II was operating in defiance of President Donald Trump’s established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote on social media that the vessel’s crew violated Washington’s blockade on ships under sanctions that call at Venezuelan ports. Video footage of the capture of the vessel has been shared in social media. Ukraine’s military intelligence-linked War&Sanctions portal revealed that the tanker was involved in exporting sanctioned Russian oil and petroleum products from ports in the Black Sea, Baltic Sea and the Pacific region, often using deceptive shipping practices. Aquila II departed Venezuela in early January as part of a flotilla of several vessels. Its location remained unclear for a long time: according to Starboard Maritime Intelligence data reviewed by The Insider, the ship only transmitted updated AIS data from the Indian Ocean the day before. It is believed that Aquila II was carrying about 700,000 barrels of Venezuelan oil and was heading to China. The vessel’s flag status is officially listed as unknown, although it has been operating under the Panamanian flag.
