The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering a decision to supply JASSM cruise missiles to Ukraine. This was reported by Military Watch Magazine , citing informed sources. The high-precision missiles are designed to be launched from fighter jets and are capable of hitting targets at great depth. If Ukraine receives them, this will open up additional opportunities for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to strike military targets inside Russia.
The delivery of JASSMs could significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Force, especially when combined with F-16s. Although they are modernized, but still aged, Cold War-era models, they are quite capable of using such missiles while remaining relatively safe in the airspace over controlled territories. In parallel, the transfer of another type of long-range missiles, the name of which has not been disclosed, is being discussed. Information about this appeared on July 14 from two independent sources familiar with the details of the new arms deliveries. In addition, Trump himself previously confirmed that the US would transfer another Patriot air defense system battery to Ukraine, while also hinting at the possible transfer of other modern equipment. JASSM missiles were accepted into service by the US military in 2003. They combine limited stealth capabilities with high accuracy and can carry a warhead weighing up to 450 kilograms. Today, only four countries operate the missiles, including Poland, which has received 110 JASSMs for its F-16s. The refusal to supply third countries, including South Korea in the 2010s, demonstrates the extreme sensitivity of this technology and explains why the US has so far refrained from transferring JASSMs even to allies.
Previously, Ukrainian Su-27 and Su-24M have already been modified to use British and French Storm Shadow and SCALP cruise missiles, which are similar to JASSM in a number of characteristics. However, the limited European weapons stockpiles make supplies from the US particularly relevant. The transfer of JASSM is expected to significantly increase the value and effectiveness of Ukraine’s F-16 fleet, which is beginning to be actively deployed as part of Western military support. For the Kremlin, this means only one thing: even facilities deep in Russian territory can no longer feel safe. If the decision is approved, Ukraine will receive another strategic tool in the fight against the aggressor state and a new argument in favor of the speedy defeat of the Putin regime.
