A US Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft crashed in the Persian Gulf region on Friday. The pilot was rescued.
This was reported by The New York Times, citing two US officials.
It is noted that the aircraft crashed near the Strait of Hormuz at approximately the same time that an F-15E strike fighter was shot down over Iranian territory. The publication’s sources provided limited information regarding the A-10 crash, specifically regarding the circumstances and the exact crash site.
The US Armed Forces launched a large-scale operation over Iranian territory to search for and rescue the pilot and weapons officer of the F-15E fighter jet.
An MC-130J Commando II Special Operations aircraft and MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were deployed for the evacuation, supported by F-35 fighter jets, A-10 attack aircraft, and MQ-9 Reaper drones.
As of the evening of April 3, it is known that one crew member has already been rescued, while search and rescue units continue to search for the second servicemember.
Meanwhile, one of the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters was hit by ground fire during the rescue operation. The helicopter’s crew managed to fly the aircraft to a safe area within Iraq.
