U.S. Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday there is "another option on the table" if Washington fails to reach a deal with Tehran to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
According to Associated Press speaking in Baku before departing for Washington, Vance said President Donald Trump directed his team to pursue a deal ensuring "the Iranians don’t have a nuclear weapon," but would "preserve his options" if negotiations fail, adding the U.S. has "the most powerful military in the world."
He said talks would continue unless the president decides otherwise.
Asked about regime change, Vance said that would be "up to the Iranian people," stressing that the administration’s focus remains on ensuring Iran cannot develop a nuclear weapon.
It comes as President Donald Trump met privately with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday and said he’d insisted that negotiations with Iran continue as the U.S. pushes for a nuclear deal with Tehran.
Trump initially threatened to take military action over Iran’s bloody crackdown on nationwide protests in January, then shifted to a pressure campaign in recent weeks to try to get Tehran to make a deal over its nuclear program.
