Ukrainian military personnel criticized the "peace plan ," in particular its clause regarding the possible withdrawal of the Defense Forces from Donbas, NBC News reports .
As the publication noted, although Ukrainian fighters are currently very weakened and most of all dream of returning to civilian life, they are not accepting offers to leave the territories of Donbas they currently hold.
"This isn’t a plan. This is a real capitulation. There’s nothing to discuss here. I’m against giving up the parts of Donetsk Oblast that we still hold. Of course, this is a sore point for me, because all this is happening in my homeland," said Senior Sergeant Vladimir Rzhavsky, who serves near Pokrovsk and commands a drone unit. He explained that before the war, he was an entrepreneur. He says four years on the front lines have ruined his health. He dreams of focusing on his recovery and raising his two sons, ages 5 and 14, when peace comes. Rzhavsky added that he would like to hear a clear explanation from the military leadership as to why the Ukrainian army must abandon the positions it still holds, particularly in his native Donetsk region. "If this is done without explanation, it won’t be carried out. It’s not the government’s leadership sitting in the trenches. It’s our guys in the trenches. They have the right to decide," he said.
Ukrainian special forces soldier Alexander, who is fighting in the south, said he and his comrades are closely monitoring developments surrounding the "peace plan." He says the situation where he is stationed is not as dire as in the east. He claims the Russians are so desperate to seize Donbas that they are pulling their troops there from the south. Alexander also rejects many key points of the plan.
"No one will make concessions on the number of troops, because this is our security guarantee," he said of the proposed limitation of the Ukrainian army to 600,000.
The soldier also opposes territorial concessions, "because this is our land, and we stand here." Alexander expressed doubt that soldiers "who risked their lives and lost comrades to slow the Russian advance" would abandon the positions they still hold in the Donetsk region.
"I won’t make any assumptions about how people will behave if there is an order to leave, but it is clear that it will not be received positively," he noted, adding that Ukraine should not rush into a peace agreement that would be tantamount to capitulation.
Alexander explained that he has two children, ran a small cocktail bar in central Kyiv before the full-scale invasion, and volunteered for military service in 2022. He says he’s not yet considering returning to civilian life.
"If we don’t stop them now, our children will have to do this, and we can’t allow that," the man emphasized. Junior Lieutenant Oleh Zontov fought against separatists in the east back in 2014, and since 2022, he’s been fighting against the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion. He says the existence of "some kind of peace plan" is good news, as he’d like to return to work as head of communications for an investment company in Kyiv once peace comes.
He noted that abandoning Ukrainian-controlled territories would be a "very controversial decision" that would cause outrage and negativity among the military.
"The Russians are not better warriors than we are. There are simply too few of us," he said.
