The UN’s World Food Programme said Friday it was stepping up its operations in Lebanon to help provide food for the nearly one million people who have been displaced from their homes. According to Associated Press despite the risks, the WFP has continued to send humanitarian convoys to southern Lebanon to villages on the border with Israel which have been subject to heavy bombing. According to a statement from WFP, 874,000 people in Lebanon were already facing “acute food insecurity” before the latest escalation. Allison Oman Lawi, the WFP County Director for Lebanon, said it was “critical” they have “safe and sustained access” to continue providing aid to people in affected areas. “Without security and the ability to reach people wherever they are, including in the most affected and hard to reach areas, it becomes much harder to deliver the lifesaving assistance that families depend on”, she said. The WFP said it provided emergency food and assistance to over 440,000 people since the escalation began on March 2. The death toll from the Israeli bombing Thursday across Lebanon has exceeded 300 people as more remains were pulled from rubble and bodies identified at hospitals. The attacks continued despite Israel’s unexpected announcement of direct ceasefire talks with Lebanon.
The Health Ministry said that 1,150 people were also wounded in widespread strikes that rocked Lebanon on Wednesday, including in busy parts of Beirut. There was no immediate response to the Israeli announcement from Lebanon, which had repeatedly proposed talks to end the war, or from Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that talks would focus on disarming Hezbollah and “establishing peaceful relations” between the countries.
