Since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, Russia has lost at least 19 generals. This was reported by The Insider, citing an analysis of open data and reports from Russian and Ukrainian sources. The publication notes that not all deaths have been officially confirmed by Russian authorities. The losses among Russia’s top military leadership have occurred both on the front lines and behind the lines, including attacks on command posts, sabotage operations, and explosions within Russian territory. Several generals were reportedly killed by snipers or artillery strikes during the first months of the war. Not all deaths were officially confirmed by Moscow.

Among the earliest confirmed casualties was General Andriy Sukhovetsky, who was killed by a sniper in Chernihiv Oblast in 2022, marking the first general whose death was acknowledged by the Russian government. Other reported losses include Oleg Mityayev, Volodymyr Frolov, Andriy Symonov, Kanamat Botashev, and Roman Kutuzov.

In 2022, Major General Andriy Kolesnikov was reported killed; however, in 2023, Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov aired a report from Syria showing Kolesnikov alive, serving as deputy commander of a Russian grouping.

The list of generals killed in subsequent years includes Dmytro Ulyanov, Serhiy Horyachev, Oleg Tsokov, Volodymyr Zavadsky, among others. In 2024 and 2025, notable casualties included Igor Kyrylov, head of Russia’s NBC troops; Yaroslav Moskalyk, deputy head of the Main Operational Directorate of the Russian General Staff; Mikhail Gudkov, deputy commander of the Russian Navy; and Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian General Staff.

Some of the deceased were retired or serving in volunteer and assault units, including formations such as Storm Z and private military companies (PMCs).

In December 2025, General-Lieutenant Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian General Staff, was killed in Moscow in a car explosion, according to Ukrainian sources.

The high attrition rate among Russia’s senior military officers underscores the severe operational challenges and internal vulnerabilities faced by the Russian military during its ongoing war in Ukraine. The generals don’t hesitate to deceive Vladimir Putin. For example, in October 2025, Vladimir Putin awarded Colonel General Sergei Kuzovlev the "Hero of Russia" medal for capturing Kupiansk. The Kremlin announced the strategic city had fallen after a year-long offensive.

Two months later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Kupiansk and recorded a video from its streets. A Ukrainian counterattack had pushed Russian forces out. Putin, according to reports, could not believe the Ukrainian president was standing in a city his generals told him Russia controlled. Russia lost Kupiansk because Putin’s generals told him they held a city they didn’t.
