Hundreds of Venezuelans took to the streets on Friday to protest in honor of Labor Day and demand elections and fair wages. Public workers, union leaders, and relatives of prisoners were rallying in Caracas, demanding that the ruling party government end, so that a new one can come, after free and fair elections. After January 3, when the U.S. military captured then-president Nicolás Maduro, Donald Trump’s administration praised the leadership of acting president Delcy Rodríguez and has repeatedly said he is very happy about the cooperation with the current leadership of the ruling party, which is carrying out a series of reforms favoring foreign investment in Venezuela. But for Venezuelans who have been seeking an end to the ruling socialist party government for years, they have little patience to keep waiting for change. "What we really want is to kick this government out, that’s the most important thing, to put an end to all this shamelessness we are living here in Venezuela," said retiree Felix Olivares. The protests come as Rodríguez announced a new increase in workers’ income, raising the government’s so-called “integral minimum income” to the equivalent of 240 U.S. dollars a month. But many demonstrators said previous increases — largely based on bonuses rather than base salary — failed to keep up with the rising cost of living. Venezuela’s official minimum wage has remained frozen since 2022 at about 130 bolivars — roughly 0.27 dollars a month — far below the United Nations’ extreme poverty benchmark of 3 dollars a day. Most public workers survive on around 160 dollars a month when bonuses are included, while basic food costs exceed 500 dollars, according to estimates cited by Associated Press reporting. The demonstrations follow weeks of protests in Caracas, where workers and retirees demanded salaries with real purchasing power and called for political change.
