Zelenskyy names spy chief Budanov head of presidential staff | Ukraine Brief

President Zelenskyy has appointed Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, as his new chief of staff. Budanov, a lieutenant general, is one of the country’s most recognizable and popular wartime figures.

He has led Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, known by its acronym GUR, since 2020 and has directed key operations against Russia, including daring stunts such as faking the death of anti-Kremlin commander Denis Kapustin, which resulted in a $500,000 bounty payout.

Oleh Ivashchenko will succeed Budanov as head of military intelligence, continuing Ukraine’s focus on experienced leadership.

On the same day, a Russian missile strike in Kharkiv destroyed a multi-storey apartment building and wounded at least 30 people.
