10 animals dead, 2 people, including child, hospitalized after Lake Wales house fire

LAKE WALES, Fla. (WFLA) — Multiple animals died and two people, including a child, were taken to the hospital Friday after a house fire in Lake Wales.

Officials said the fire broke out shortly after 5 p.m. The home on Shady Oak Avenue was engulfed in flames when crews with Polk County Fire Rescue arrived.

A spokesperson for the Polk County Board of County Commissioners said two people — one adult and one child — were taken to a local hospital with injuries. No further information was immediately available regarding their conditions.

Three adult dogs and seven puppies did not make it out of the home, according to authorities.

No first responders were injured in the fire. As of Friday night, there was no word on what may have caused the blaze.

The incident is being investigated by the Florida State Fire Marshals Office.
