2 crashes on I-5 near Battle Ground leave 1 dead, DOT worker hurt

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A fatal crash, as well as a separate traffic incident a few hours later, prompted the closure of all lanes on a section of I-5 southbound near Battle Ground early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Just before 5 a.m., Washington State Patrol troopers first responded to the area on reports of a crash involving two vehicles.

Arriving at the scene, they found one person dead and other vehicle occupants injured.

Officials then shut down all lanes of I-5 southbound and Washington State Department of Transportation crews responded to the area to assist with traffic control while troopers continued the crash investigation.

The driver who officials say caused the crash was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Then, at around 7:15 a.m., while DOT crews were still on the scene, a separate driver rear-ended a DOT truck and a DOT worker was taken to the hospital. Officials say he is expected to survive.

According to WDSOT, all lanes of I-5 southbound at milepost 10 near 179th Street, as well as the westbound SR 502 on-ramp to southbound I-5 were closed, but were reopened as of 12 p.m.
