WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said that a 3-year-old girl died days after a shooting in Southeast D.C.
MPD officers responded to a reported shooting in the 1000 block of 14th St. SE around 3:05 a.m. on Saturday. When they arrived, they found 3-year-old Honesty Cheadle of Southeast, D.C., with a gunshot wound in her upper body.
DC Fire and EMS responded and took the girl to the hospital with critical injuries.
She died on Monday.
Police believe that at least one suspect started firing a gun in the block. Honesty was in a parked car with her family members, and the gunfire struck the car, hitting the girl.
“This is a tragedy for Honesty’s family and our entire city, and I express my deepest condolences to her loved ones as they cope with such an unimaginable loss. Our detectives are working hard, pursuing several leads, and will do everything in their power to find those responsible for this shooting and bring them to justice,” MPD Chief of Police Pamela Smith said in a news release.
