4-year-old killed in accidental shooting on Briggs Avenue in Durham, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The Durham Police Department confirmed an accidental shooting on Briggs Avenue Monday night resulted in the death of a 4-year-old.

According to Durham police on scene, the shooting occurred in the North Briggs Avenue in Durham. Police said the preliminary investigation revealed the 4-year-old boy gained access to an unsecured firearm inside the home and shot himself accidentally.

Rhonda Rappoccio, a witness at the scene said she was called out into the street where she found the child and his mother. She said the ambulance was called and picked up the boy, but drove away without its sirens on.

In a news release police said the boy was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
