ST. LOUIS – Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey initiated removal proceedings against St. Louis Sheriff Alfred Montgomery, demanding his resignation by noon Wednesday.
Bailey’s ultimatum comes amid accusations of financial mismanagement, workplace misconduct and abuse of authority against Montgomery. The Attorney General formally requested Montgomery’s resignation in a letter on Tuesday, citing these allegations.
Montgomery, however, has challenged the Attorney General’s claims, stating that the ultimatum is “not based on proven facts.”
Montgomery’s lawyer, retired Judge David Mason, has expressed readiness to contest the removal proceedings.
Both sides spoke to FOX 2 as the showdown continues between Montgomery and Bailey.
