CANTON, Ohio (WJW) — A worker at Aultman Hospital was shot while on-duty Friday, June 27.
Just after 8 p.m., a suspect fought with two security guards at the 6th Street hospital and wrested away one of their firearms, according to a Canton police report.
The gun went off, with one bullet striking a 31-year-old nurse technician in the abdomen, according to police reports. She was treated at the hospital and was reported Friday night to be in stable condition.
Investigators learned the suspect had been admitted to the hospital about eight hours before the shooting, and was in a private room for observation.
When hospital workers intervened to keep the man from injuring himself, he became “combative,” reads the reports.
Responding Canton police officers arrived to find security guards restraining the suspect on a bed, according to the reports. They helped restrain his ankles before taking him away in a police cruiser. He was showing “serious signs of mental distress,” reads one report.
Officers also recovered the security guard’s handgun and magazines.
The hospital issued a statement on Friday night that read:
At Aultman, the safety and security of our patients, visitors and colleagues is our highest priority. We are doing everything we can to care for a member of our Aultman family who was struck by a bullet in the line of duty at Aultman Hospital tonight. The colleague and family have reported that the colleague is in stable condition. The Emergency Department is safe and secure, and we are actively treating and accepting patients. We are working closely with the Canton Police Department to uncover all the details of what happened.
