California bars, clubs must now offer these items to customers

(FOX 5/KUSI) — Out at a bar or nightclub in California and you want a lid for your drink?

A new California law now mandates that the business provide it, but you may have to pay for it.

The law, AB 2375, is a new effort by legislators to help prevent customers’ drinks from being tampered with. A separate law already requires drug testing strips to be made available at bars and clubs.

The new law mandates that bars and clubs provide a lid for drinks if the customer asks for it, but the businesses can charge “a reasonable price” for the lids.

The law, which starts on July 1, also requires these businesses to post signage that reads, “Don’t get roofied! Drink lids and drink spiking drug test kits available here. Ask a staff member for details.”

According to the text of the law, the lids made available don’t have to fit all containers in which alcohol is served, but should fit at least one.

The law sunsets in January of 2027.
