CLEMSON, S.C. (WSPA) – New details are available about the firing of Clemson University’s former head gymnastics coach.
The university had fired Amy Smith, former Clemson gymnastics head coach, for cause in April, documents said. In the separation notice document, Smith had violated three sections of the employment agreement including v., viii., and ix.
Section v. of the document states that the coach must treat student-athletes safely and to avoid anything that could cause harm, including physical and/or emotional abuse.
Section viii. states that the coach is responsible for building a strong team of people with good character and academic ability.
Section ix. states that the coach is to follow the university’s policies, academic priorities, and values.
Clemson announced the addition of a gymnastics team in 2021. Smith was hired as the head coach in April of 2022.
