DC police arrest man accused of shooting, killing girl

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — D.C. police announced in a news conference that the suspect wanted for the shooting that killed a toddler has been arrested.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said on Friday that officers arrested 24-year-old Charles Rucker for the deadly shooting that broke out in the 1000 block of 14th St. at around 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 5.

During the incident, MPD said that a bullet from the shooting struck 3-year-old Honesty Cheadle in her upper body. She was sitting in a parked car with her family at the time.

The toddler was rushed to the hospital, where she died days later on Monday, July 7.

Rucker was identified as the suspect who was firing his gun, causing a bullet to hit Cheadle.

“To Honesty’s family, we know today’s news does not make you whole again,” MPD Police Chief Pamela Smith said during the news conference. “Nothing we can do will be able to fill the void that is left by Honesty’s passing but we do hope that the arrest brings some measure of comfort to your family.”
