On Tuesday, several firefighters responded to a huge explosion at a fireworks facility in Yolo County, according to the Winter Fire Department.
Officials said that around 6 p.m., they started to investigate the cause of the explosion, which was close to the Esparto and Madison area near Country Road 23 and 86A.
The fire created a lot of spots of fire in the area, which were referred to by Cal Fire as the Oakdale Fire, officials said. The fire has burned roughly 78 acres with one home and car being destroyed by the fire.
On Wednesday, Cal Fire said that seven people were unaccounted for following that explosion. Two people who were injured in the fire are expected to recover.
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office suggested that the state is open to the possibility of criminal activity related to the fire.
“Our office is closely tracking the fire and explosion in Yolo County. @CAL_FIRE and @Cal_OES have deployed air and ground resources,” the governor’s office said in a social media post. “The State Fire Marshal has sent an arson and bomb investigation team, and stands ready to provide additional support as needed.”
The sheriff’s office also said that a bomb unit is investigating the explosion.
The sheriff’s office is asking the community to avoid the area around the facility near Country Road 23 and Country Road 86A.
