Driver dead after crashing into San Diego Bay near Coronado hotel

CORONADO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A woman is dead after a vehicle crashed into the San Diego Bay Friday in Coronado, authorities confirmed.

Shortly after 4:15 p.m., authorities received a report about an unknown type of collision at the entrance of the Loews Coronado Bay Resort, according to Lt. Anthony Flores with the Coronado Police Department.

When officers arrived on scene, the vehicle was fully submerged in the San Diego Bay.

A diving team was able to recover the victim who was submerged in the water for 30 to 40 minutes, Flores said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her identity has not been released at this time.

Coronado Bay Road was closed until 10 p.m.

Mike Koesterer says he saw the crash while standing on the back deck of his friend’s boat when a yellow car drove by, clipped the curb and went through the barricades and into the water.

Several bystanders, including Koesterer, attempted to rescue the woman. He said he went to grab a paddle board and was in the water within ten seconds.

“I was over the car within a minute and a half. There were a couple kids that had jumped into the water. I was out of breath, I said ‘hey, how’s your breath, can you go down?’ They went down, they couldn’t feel anything, it was too deep. I went down and I could touch, but I couldn’t hold my breath long enough,” Koesterer said.

The woman was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
