Elevated levels of bacteria close Northern California swimming spot

(FOX40.COM) — The City of Chico advised residents to avoid swimming at a local swimming pool after elevated levels of bacteria were found in the water.

Sycamore Pool in Bidwell Park isn’t a typical public pool filled with water from the city. Its built into part of Big Chico Creek, fed by untreated water sources.

“Sycamore Pool is a Chico treasure that has been enjoyed by residents and visitors for decades; however, the safety of our community comes first,” said Shane Romain, City of Chico Park and Natural Resources Manager. “Right now, the water in Sycamore Pool has increased levels of bacteria, swimming is not recommended. We are working closely with Butte County Public Health to monitor the situation.”

The city said the bacteria pose an increased risk of illness to children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems.

The city also reminded residents not to swallow water from natural waterways, even when bacteria levels aren’t elevated, and to wash their hands with soap before eating.
