Eric Adams launches independent campaign: ‘Stand with me’

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Mayor Eric Adams officially launched his re-election campaign Thursday on the steps of City Hall, in front of a crowd chanting “Eric” and “four more years.”

Joined by many faith leaders Thursday afternoon, Adams officially announced his bid for re-election. Adams, a Democrat, announced in April that he would sit out the Democratic primary and run in the November general election as an independent candidate.

Early on in Adams’s address, a passerby yelled out, “Eric Adams is a f–king criminal.” In response, Adams led the crowd behind him in a chant of his common phrase, “stay focused, no distractions and grind.”

“You can call me all the names you want, but I’m only going to answer to one, Mayor Adams,” he said.

Adams pointed to his childhood, his religious faith and his time as a police officer and time as a state Senator. He noted his efforts to remove illegal guns from the streets and build affordable housing.

“In my second term, I’m going to continue to bring down crime, launch a citywide mental health initiative, advance workforce development and vocational education, expand housing faster than ever before,” Adams said.

On Tuesday, state Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani declared victory in the Democratic primary after former Gov. Andrew Cuomo conceded the race. An official winner has not yet been declared.

The current mayor seemingly called out Mamdani a few times, making remarks about Mamdani’s social media campaigning and politics. He also said a rent freeze, a key part of Mamdani’s campaign, is not realistic for small landlords.

“This election is a choice between a candidate with a blue collar and one with a … silver spoon,” Adams said. “A choice between dirty fingernails and manicured nails.”
