Five rescued after boat capsizes near Washington Monument on Fourth of July

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — D.C. crews rescued five people after a boat capsized in the Potomac River on the Fourth of July.

In a post on the X platform just after 10:30 p.m., the DC Fire and EMS Department said five men were rescued after a boat overturned in the river near the Washington Monument. The boat was by an anchorage zone, which is a designated place where boats can safely anchor in the water.

Responders took one of the men to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to DCFD.

The rescue took place not long after the District’s iconic fireworks show on the National Mall, which is where the Washington Monument is located.

At this time, it is unclear what caused the boat to flip in the water.
