Flooded Chapel Hill apartments evacuated; cars, stores, areas of town swamped, officials say

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — After a flash flood warning and torrential rains from the remnants of Tropical Depression Chantal, Chapel Hill areas were flooded Sunday night.

In a flash flood warning just after 8 p.m., the National Weather Service said 6 inches of rain had fallen in areas of Chapel Hill.

As of 9:20 p.m., crews were evacuating some units that flooded in the Camelot Village apartments in the 100 block of S. Estes Drive, according to Chapel Hill Police.

Town staff and Orange County crews are coordinating transportation and shelter for the evacuated residents, Chapel Hill officials.

Elsewhere, dozens of cars were flooded at the Eastgate Crossing shopping center and floodwaters were seen inside a store.

Meanwhile, Raleigh Road at Country Club Road is closed because of a downed tree.

Also, some areas in Chapel Hill are closed because of flash flooding Sunday night.

Those flooded areas include:

  • 1800 E. Franklin Street (Eastgate area)
  • Hillsborough Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Bolinwood Dr.
  • 200 block of S. Estes Drive (University Place area)
  • 200 block of S. Elliott Road
  • Estes Dr. at Library Dr.
  • Fordham Blvd. and Elliott Rd.
  • Fordham Blvd. and Cleland Dr.
  • Fordham Blvd. and Brandon Rd.
