Forsyth Fire now 42% contained as it continues to burn Washington County

PINE VALLEY, Utah (ABC4) — The Forsyth Fire, which continues to burn in Pine Valley just north of St. George, is 42% contained as of the latest update provided by the U.S. Forest Service- Dixie National Forest on Wednesday morning, July 2.

The lightning-caused fire was first discovered on June 19 and has since scorched 13,419 acres. Through the work of around 600 firefighting personnel, the U.S. Forest Service said additional fire containment was reached on Tuesday with the completion of a handline in the southwest corner of the fire up to Forsyth Creek and around the Pine Valley Recreation Area.

“Crews also worked in the Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness to build handline along the Summit Trail system to stall the growth from the eastern progression,” the U.S. Forest Service said in its update. “Aircraft have been heavily utilized in the last few days to extinguish hotspots, applying retardant, and supporting numerous resources throughout the Wilderness Area.”

Firefighters and heavy equipment are also working near New Harmony to be available for fire suppression and clearing around roads to reduce fuels and create fuel breaks. However, forecasted weather continues to be a concern for firefighters in the area.

Monsoonal moisture in the atmosphere is expected to bring a heightened chance of dry lightning and unpredictable wind gusts of up to 20 miles per hour with possible microbursts. Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect for all lands in Washington and Iron County, as well as the surrounding counties.

Pine Valley, Grass Valley and Gray’s Ranch are on a “Set” level evacuation order, meaning residents should have emergency kits prepped and ready to go in case an evacuation order is given. Meanwhile, Pinto is in a “Ready” status, meaning residents should be aware and begin preparing for any possible evacuation order.
