PANGUITCH, Utah (ABC4) — The France Canyon fire that started on June 11 due to lightning is now at 64% containment and has burned 33,362 acres, according to the latest information released by the U.S. Forest Service- Dixie National Forest.
Officials say the fire perimeter is contained on the north, northeast, south and most of the western flanks. With monsoon-like weather expected in the next few days, crews say they will continue to patrol and mop up along the fire line.
They are also on alert for any initial attack needs in the event of dry lightning in the area.
With the monsoon push, officials say they are closely monitoring scattered showers, thunderstorms, lightning strikes and strong gusty outflow winds, with gusts of 35 mph.
Fighting the fire
As far as operations are concerned, crews backhauled the hose out of the fire area except for some that remain around structures in Johnson Canyon. They also began repairs between Skunk and Badger Creeks, which is around the Little Bear Fire footprint. Work will continue with the Resource Advisor to complete repair activities in the area.
A Stage 1 Fire Restriction Order has been issued across Utah, which means no open fires of any kind except within established facilities are permitted.
All lands within the boundaries of Bryce Canyon National Park, Dixie National Forest, Color Country BLM District and Paria River BLM District are in a Stage 1 Fire Restriction.
Bryce Canyon National Park, State Route 12 and Highway 89 continue to remain open.
