High heat returns with above average temperatures ahead

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4) – Happy Thursday, Utah! Daytime highs have snapped back, and we are about to get the reminder that the summer heat doesn’t play around.

The average high in Salt Lake is 88 degrees this time of year, and 99 degrees in St. George, but we will jump several degrees above that in the North and a few degrees above that in the south. Today, valleys along the Wasatch Front will climb into the low to mid 90s, 70s and 80s for higher terrain, and triple digits returning to Washington County.

High pressure will allow for the clear conditions, dry skies and skyrocketing temperatures through the weekend. By tomorrow, the 90s will have a firm grip on the Wasatch Front, and we can’t rule out the chance for another triple digit day along the Wasatch Front by Monday.

We do see a weak brush-by storm Friday into Saturday which will slightly increase winds, so our fire threat could become slightly elevated. Given the already dry vegetation and extreme heat, fire concerns should remain top of mind.

We already have three major fires already burning in southern Utah, two of which are causing major problems and churning out smoke. Air quality impacts have been recorded this week, and moderate air is expected in several counties due to elevated particulate matter from smoke. Hazy skies will be noticeable statewide and thicker plumes of smoke from active wildfires will impact the southern and central parts of the state.

  • Warming trend underway
  • High heat returns
  • 90s and 100s return Thursday
  • Dry pattern overall
  • Smoke across the state, especially in south & east
  • Breezy on Friday
  • Elevated fire threat possible Fri-Sat
