KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hurts Donut is hosting a fundraiser Wednesday to support the family of Noah Lakey, a 14-year-old who died earlier this month after getting hit by a car while riding a bike.
The donut shop said it will be donating 100% of the proceeds from a special tribute donut in honor of Noah. These will be sold at a marked-up price to financially assist his family. In addition to that, they will donate 10% of all Hurts dozen sales.
The fundraising event is on Wednesday at Journey Church International. It starts at 11 a.m. and will last until the donut truck sells out of donuts and other baked goods.
The donut shop posted on Facebook following the loss of Lakey, saying:
“Loss like this leaves a hole no one can fill and though we can’t take away the pain, we can show up with open hearts and helping hands. Please help us surround this family with love, generosity, and support. Tragedy can shake a community, but it also brings out its heart. We hope that together we can carry some of this heavy weight.”
According to police, Lakey was riding along the sidewalk near SW Jefferson Road and SW Scherer Road when he entered the westbound lane and collided with a vehicle.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. The driver was evaluated at the scene and did not require medical attention.
Noah was just weeks away from starting his freshman year of high school.
If you are looking for other ways to support his family, a GoFundMe was created by friends of the family, which has raised over $27,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.
The Lee’s Summit Police Department says the investigation is ongoing, but so far, the crash appears to be a tragic accident.
