IMPD: Woman killed following ‘accidental discharge’ of firearm in downtown Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — An investigation is underway after an “accidental discharge of a firearm” left a woman dead in downtown Indy Thursday night.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called around 5:06 p.m. to the 500 block of Massachusetts Avenue in response to a reported shooting that had taken place.

IMPD said officers arrived and found an adult female with a gunshot wound inside a residence. The woman was pronounced dead on the scene.

Homicide detectives also assisted at the scene and detained two individuals to question their alleged involvement in the incident. These individuals were later released in “consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office,” according to IMPD.

Since it preliminarily appears that the fatal shooting wasn’t self-inflicted, IMPD Public Information Officer Tommy Thompson said the prosecutor’s office could file a negligence charge in the future.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office will determine the woman’s exact cause of death at a later time and release her identity once next-of-kin notifications have been made. IMPD urged anyone with information to contact the homicide office at 317-327-3475.
