Police are asking the public to avoid an area in downtown Los Angeles near the Crypto.com Arena after an officer fired shots at a machete-wielding man on Sunday morning.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to KTLA that around 9:12 a.m., officers were called to the area of Olympic Boulevard and Figueroa Street for reports of a man armed with a machete who was threatening a security guard.
Details are limited, and the LAPD did not immediately expand on what transpired between the time of the call and the time officers arrived — but early reports suggest a short pursuit was initiated. KTLA is working to confirm this information.
The L.A. Fire Department told KTLA that crews were called to the scene of an officer-involved shooting at 1158 S. Figueroa St., which is located right in front of the Crypto.com Arena. LAFD said the victim was not breathing at the time the department was called in to help.
Paramedics arrived and, while transporting the unidentified victim to the hospital, LAFD said he was going into cardiac arrest. As of 10:20 a.m., authorities have not provided the man’s age or updated condition.
LAPD’s Central Division posted on X at 9:33 a.m., alerting the community to expect Figueroa Street to be closed between Pico Boulevard and 12th Street due to an active investigation. The department later noted that LA Live Way would remain open for Sunday’s Sparks game.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
