Man allegedly poses as bystander after being involved in fatal West Valley crash

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4) — A 20-year-old man was taken into custody on Sunday, accused of being involved in a fatal car crash and pretending to be a bystander.

Osvaldo Chavez Segovia was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on third-degree felony charges of failure to remain at an accident involving death and obstruction of justice. He also faces misdemeanor charges of providing false information and having a measurable concentration of alcohol as a minor.

The fatal crash reportedly involved three cars just after midnight near 5200 South and Highway 111 on Sunday, July 13. The crash resulted in three people being taken to the hospital for medical treatment, and at least one person dying on the scene. Several others allegedly fled the crash site.

Segovia, however, reportedly stayed on scene, gave responding officers a fake name, and said he was walking in the area when the crash happened.

At the time of the crash, officers ruled it a hit-and-run. Following an investigation, police said they later identified Segovia as a driver involved in the fatal crash. Segovia was later taken into custody at his residence and booked into jail on the aforementioned charges. Court records show he has been ordered to be held without bail, pending a pretrial hearing.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
