MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man is facing charges after being armed with a rifle from an apartment balcony on Saturday night, according to the Monroe Police Department.
Around 7:50 p.m., officers responded to a call about a man shooting an assault rifle from a balcony on Castleberry Ct. in the Nottingham Apartments. When they arrived, the man, later identified as 51-year-old David Chancey Lockhart, retreated inside the apartment but continued to shoot through the walls and floor, officials said.
Officials quickly evacuated the apartment building and called the department’s Special Response Team and Hostage Negotiators. They successfully used drone technology and non-lethal options to take Lockhart into custody just before 10:30 p.m.
Lockhart was taken to a local hospital to receive a mental health evaluation. He will be charged after he is released from the hospital, Monroe Police said.
No one was injured during the incident.
“I’m thankful no residents and no law enforcement officers were injured or hurt, and that this incident was resolved in the male being taken into custody without incident and he will be provided mental health services from certified medical personnel,” Chief Bolen said. “I would also like to thank the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union EMS, and Monroe Fire Department for their assistance.”
