WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A man was charged Wednesday after allegedly stabbing a D.C. police officer in the head during an attempted theft, according to the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Columbia.
Andre Zephyrin, 45, is facing charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and assault on a police officer while armed.
According to court documents, on June 24 at 8:31 a.m., officers received reports of a theft in progress at a CVS located in Northwest D.C.
There, a CVS employee told police that Zephyrin allegedly filled a reusable bag with merchandise and left without paying. The employee also noted that he had attempted to grab her phone to prevent her from calling the police.
The USAO states officers saw Zephyrin in the 600 block of Florida Avenue NW, where he ran away when confronted, dropping the alleged stolen goods.
As officers attempted to arrest him, he allegedly pulled out a knife and swung it multiple times towards officers. He then struck an officer, causing them to bleed heavily.
The officer sustained severe injuries to the head, including a three-inch cut that required 30 stitches.
Zephyrin was then arrested and has since remained in custody. He is being held without bond as he awaits a preliminary hearing set for July 7.
