Mayor Bowser activates extreme heat alert as heat wave pushes across DMV

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — As a heat wave causes temperatures to soar to the triple digits, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has activated an extreme heat alert. The alert will remain in effect until Wednesday, June 25.

The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasted that over the next two days, temperatures will exceed 100 degrees. Officials emphasized that the heat combined with high humidity will push the heat index up to 110 degrees at times.

D.C. officials encourage residents and visitors to take precautions, stay indoors when possible, stay hydrated and check on seniors.

Cooling centers will remain open across the District. Low-barrier shelters and day centers will also stay open for people who are experiencing homelessness.

The following low-barrier shelters will remain open 24 hours:

  • New York Avenue Men’s Shelter (1355 New York Avenue NE)
  • 801 East Men’s Shelter (2722 MLK Jr. Avenue SE)
  • Adams Place Men’s Shelter (2210 Adams Place NE)
  • Emery Men’s Shelter (1725 Lincoln Road NE)
  • Pat Handy Women’s Shelter (810 5th Street NW)
  • Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter (1910 Massachusetts Avenue SE)
  • Living Life Alternatives LGBTQ+ Shelter (400 50th Street SE)

One of the best ways to cool off in the summer heat is to go for a swim or splash around in cold water. Officials said spray parks will open from 10- 6 p.m., indoor pools are available and outdoor pools will operate six days a week.

The District will also deploy cooling buses at locations across the city to help people who are facing homelessness get relief from the heat.
