Metro to extend weekend hours, adjust Red Line rush hour times

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Starting on Sunday, June 22, Metro is increasing the number of service hours on its rail system for the weekend.

On Saturdays and Sundays, the trains will start running at 6 a.m. and end at 2 a.m. (also on Saturdays and Sundays).

There’s also a change on the Red Line: during rush hour, trains will run every four minutes. Currently, they run every five minutes.

Additionally, Metro is releasing a new map that will be displayed at the stations across the DMV on Sunday. It includes a split on the Silver Line — with half of the trains going to New Carrollton and the other half going to Downtown Largo. That begins on Sunday.

Another change reflected on the map is an extension of the Yellow Line, where trains will go to Greenbelt, but that does not begin until December.

Riders who spoke with DC News Now about the changes were excited about the news.

“An extra minute can make all the difference if you’re running late, and there’s been a lot of congestion in the mornings and afternoons on the Metro,” said Madeline, a Red Line commuter.

Lucas Young added he believes the trains will be less crowded if they run more frequently. He also shared his excitement about the later trains on weekends.

“We can go dancing a little bit longer, and enjoy a little bit more with DC has to offer,” he said.
