CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (PIX11) — Miki Sudo was dubbed the winner of the annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July women’s hot dog eating competition in Coney Island on Friday.
Sudo defended her ten-time win streak with 33 hot dogs eaten in 10 minutes. Her previous record was 51 hot dogs.
Michelle “Cardboard Shell” Lesco won second place with 22.7 hot dogs, after coming in third the year before. Domenica Dee, host of “Dee Street Eats,” came in third place.
“I feel like I let the fans down a little bit. I heard people in the crowd saying, ‘Go for 52,’” Sudo told ESPN. “Obviously, I’m always setting my goals high, but the hot dogs weren’t cooperating. For some reason, the buns felt larger today.”
The annual gastronomic battle, which dates back to 1972, is held in front of the original Nathan’s Famous restaurant at New York’s Coney Island and draws large crowds of fans, many wearing foam hot dog hats.
The men’s competition with 16-time winner Joey Chestnut is set to begin at 12 p.m.
