Mother charged in 2024 Raleigh apartment fire that killed toddler, 4-year-old: Police

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A woman has been charged in connection with a 2024 apartment fire in Raleigh that killed her two children, police said Thursday.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers responded on Sept. 29, 2024, just after 6 a.m. to a fire in the 1800 block of Cantwell Court, where they located a fire in the kitchen. The fire was quickly put out.

A one-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy were taken the hospital for smoke inhalation, where they later died, according to Raleigh police.

Police said the children’s mother, 34-year-old Rodreika Porter, was also inside the apartment and not injured. An investigation determined she left her children unattended when the fire broke out.

Porter was arrested on Thursday by the Ahoskie Police Department. She is charged with two counts of felony child neglect inflicting serious bodily injury, according to Raleigh police.
