Nash County hosts pet adoption event and tour after animal control violation backlash

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WNCN) — Nash County Pet Connections, the animal shelter in hot water after a list of violations was reported by the state, looks to repair the relationship between themselves and the community with more corrective action this weekend.

The county hosted the community with an event titled “Rescue and Recruit” on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It offered tours of the facility, an opportunity to volunteer or work for the shelter, and free adoption of pets available.

“We owe it to our constituents, our staff who do the right thing every day, and most importantly, to the animals who cannot speak for themselves, to get this right,” Nash County Board of Commissioners Chair Wayne Outlaw said in a statement Thursday. “We will restore integrity and compassion to this operation.”

CBS 17 previously reported that the animal control supervisor Matthew Ingram was fired Thursday after the investigation by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The investigation found that multiple cats and dogs were euthanized before the 72-hour holding period required by the state. The 13-page report also accused the supervisor of lying about it.

As a result of this investigation, Nash County was fined $6,700 for the violations and must either pay the fine or appeal the penalty to the North Carolina Office of Administrative Hearings within 60 days after the notice from the investigation was received.
