(FOX40.COM) — The NCAA Division I Council voted to deny Sacramento State’s waiver request to transition from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision, which means that the Hornets will not be moving forward to the highest level of college football at this time.
After the announcement was made, the university’s president, Dr. Luke Wood, continued to have hope that at some point the team would level up.
Wood took to X and had the following statement:
“Sacramento State has met every meaningful benchmark for FBS membership, and we believe our university, our students, and the entire Sacramento region deserve major college football. We’re full steam ahead, and we still plan to be playing FBS football in 2026.”
In April, Sacramento State decided that the next step for its football program would be to move to independent status while it awaits an invitation from an FBS conference.
For the upcoming 2025 season, the Hornets will continue to play in the Big Sky Conference. Their season begins at South Dakota State on August 30.
