Police tase suspect after assault, knife attack in downtown Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was tased and taken into police custody after officials say he punched a person and likely attacked another with a knife in downtown Portland Friday evening.

The incident unfolded at 7:15 p.m., when police said a man who had been cut on the hand by a knife walked up to the Central Precinct. Officers then called for EMS and the man was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

At around the same time, officers responded to the area of Southwest 2nd and Ankeny on reports of a man threatening people with stick.

As police were arriving at the scene, the suspect approached a pickup truck along Southwest 2nd Avenue. A passenger in the pickup then got out was punched by the suspect, authorities said.

Officers rushed in the deescalate the fight, eventually using a taser on the suspect.

According to police, the suspect “was so violent they had to be sedated before being transported to the hospital.”

Officials added the man cut by the knife was likely assaulted by the same suspect, and another individual was menaced.
