PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland man drowned after being pulled by a fast current on the John Day River Saturday afternoon, the Gilliam County Sheriff’s Office said.
Just after 2:30 p.m., officials said they received a text to 911 reporting someone “lost and injured in the water,” then drowned upriver from Cottonwood State Park on the John Day River.
As multiple emergency crews and agencies responded to the area, another 911 text stated a man’s body was recovered at around 3 p.m.
According to the Gilliam County Sheriff’s Office, the 28-year-old man and his family had been fishing along the river when he got swept away by a fast current. He was then pulled underwater and missing for about ten minutes.
Once the man was found by family members, they – and other bystanders in the area – attempted CPR. But he was soon pronounced dead by arriving emergency responders, officials said.
No further information, including the man’s identity, has been released at this time.
