NEW YORK (PIX11) – Thousands of New York City residents woke up without power for a third day in a row on Wednesday amid extreme heat, according to Con Edison’s outage map.
Most of the outages are concentrated in Queens and Brooklyn. Around 2,438 customers in Queens have no power, while about 2,642 people in Brooklyn are experiencing outages.
Con Edison is sending crews out to evaluate the outages. It’s unclear when affected residents will see their power turn back on.
The utility has also urged residents to conserve energy, like turning off unnecessary air conditioners or avoiding using energy-intensive appliances like a microwave during peak heat hours.
Power outages started affecting neighborhoods across the city on Monday, when temperatures neared 100 degrees. The National Weather Service said the heat broke a record dating back to 1888 on Tuesday, with Central Park reaching 98 degrees.
Cooling centers and some swimming pools across the city will have extended hours on Wednesday due to the heat, Gov. Kathy Hochul said.
The tri-state area is also under an air quality alert amid conditions that now-elevated, ground-level pollution could be risky for young children, seniors and people with underlying health conditions.
