Riverview couple holds 1st birthday party for broken street light in hopes of repairs

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Kerry Smith can’t help but smile, watching video of the 1-year-old birthday party he and his wife held for the Tampa Electric street light that had been broken for a year.

A fun-loving couple, they decided to funnel their frustration into humor, in hopes of finally getting the attention of TECO.

They had “birthday” and “get well” balloons, and a cake with candles that they say are more useful than this broken street light.

Smith said they pulled the birthday stunt to get attention from TECO after they say their complaints went nowhere for a year. They even sent a birthday invitation to TECO.

They said every time they file a complaint, the utility company promises to fix it in between five-to-10 days, but they did nothing more than tie caution tape around it. At more than 365 days, the couple was fed up.

“I think that there is a bunch of numbers of people, meaning there’s a stack of claims since the hurricanes, and they just haven’t caught up.” Smith said.

So, they took video of their party and sent it to Better Call Behnken. We reached out to TECO, and the light was fixed the next day. TECO apologized that it wasn’t done earlier.
