DENVER (KDVR) — Rocky Mountain National Park’s largest campground is finally reopening after a prolonged project shut down its most popular spot for two years — and soon, you’ll be able to get reservations.
Recreation.gov announced that Moraine Campground, with 244 sites near the Estes Park entrance via Bear Lake Road, will reopen from July 9 through July 22, and on Tuesday, all the campsites will be available for reservation.
Starting at 8 a.m., reservations can be made online through recreation.gov, through the mobile app or by calling 1-877-444-6777. While there will be hundreds of spots available, many campers will be pining for a spot after the extended closure.
Before the campground closed in 2023, it hosted about 30,000 campers each year and was fairly difficult to find a reservation throughout the season. The park planned on closing the popular campground for only a year for a $19 million major rehabilitation project to replace the campground’s water, wastewater and electrical systems.
However, that project took much longer than expected.
The campground stayed closed through the summer of 2024 due to construction delays. The park had said the scope and scale of the project were significant, and the production in the field didn’t match the schedule.
The park said the campground would remain closed through the fall, and finally, after two years, it’s going to be open to the public again for part of July.
The campsite has space for tents and RVs. Some spaces have electrical hook-ups, and all sites have a picnic table, a fire ring with a grate and a food storage box.
