PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A comprehensive street construction project is set to begin Monday to resolve key safety issues “in the heart of the NE Broadway business district,” according to the Portland Bureau of Transportation.
In what PBOT officials are calling “a long awaited investment,” construction will start by repaving a more than half-mile stretch of Northeast Weidler and Broadway, after crews began building new ADA corner ramps in the last year.
PBOT says their crews will remove and replace damaged pavement, as well as make additional safety improvements, including new pedestrian crossings, reduced speed limits and others.

During the repaving period, PBOT says to expect rough roads, delays, and detours from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, with potential for some weekend work.
PBOT’s paving schedule (subject to change):
Northeast Weidler Street – Monday, July 7 through Wednesday, July 16
- From the west side of 15th to west side of 21st Avenue (working west to east)
- From the west side of 21st to west side of 24th avenues (working west to east)

Northeast Broadway – Monday, July 21 through Monday, August 4
- From the east side of 22nd Avenue to east side of 15th Avenue (working east to west)
- From the east side of 15th Avenue to west side of 11th Avenue (working east to west)
Immediately after paving, PBOT says their crews will stripe the travel lane lines, then other markings for crosswalks, bike lanes and parking will be installed.
This work on the project is funded by Fixing Our Streets, the 10-cent per gallon gas tax which was renewed by voters in May 2024.
According to PBOT, they expect construction to be complete by sometime this fall.
