SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department are on scene near 600 West near the Salt Lake Central station, conducting two separate investigations of a shooting and a train crash involving a pedestrian that could possibly be connected.
The first investigation is taking place near 230 South and 600 West, where officers responded to a shooting around 4:50 a.m. Upon arrival, the Salt Lake City Police Department said they found one person with critical injuries. That person, who has only been identified as a male, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but it is unclear how he got there.
Police believe the suspect in the shooting may have fled the scene, but said there is no immediate risk to the public at this time. Anyone with information about the reported shooting is asked to call the police department at 801-799-3000.
A second investigation is underway at a train crossing located near 575 South and 600 West, just a few blocks away from the shooting. Police say the victim, identified by police only as a male, was struck while attempting to cross the tracks around 5:10 a.m. and suffered critical injuries. He was also taken to the hospital in critical condition.
At this time, officers are working to investigate whether the two cases may be connected.
The train crash, which did not appear to involve a UTA train, is causing significant delays to the UTA network. On Friday morning, UTA reported systemwide delays due to a “non-UTA train vs pedestrian” incident and implemented a bus bridge from Salt Lake Central Station to Provo. Commuters seeking more information are encouraged to call UTA at 801-743-3882.
TRAX trains have reportedly not been affected by the delays.
ABC4 has a crew en route to the scene and will update this article as more information becomes available.
