FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — Thousands were left without power after a line of severe storms pushed across D.C., Maryland and Virginia, knocking over trees and damaging power lines.
More than 10,000 customers across Northern Virginia were still without power Friday afternoon, according to Dominion Energy’s outage map.
Steven Ramzi just moved into the apartment complex at Florence Drive and Glebe Road in Alexandria, where power was knocked out Thursday evening and stayed off into the late afternoon Friday.
“I slept in the heat, woke up at 6 a.m., still no power. I called out of work because I didn’t want to leave my dog here, I don’t know how hot it’s going to get. I’m surprised it still hasn’t come back on,” said Ramzi.

Over in D.C. and Maryland, about 4,903 Pepco customers also lost service during the severe thunderstorms. The Pepco outage map noted that there were just over 570 active outages as of Friday morning.
“Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds caused widespread outages across our service area Thursday evening. Downed trees and extensive damage to the local energy grid have impacted many customers. Pepco crews, along with local contractors, are working around the clock to safely restore power as quickly as possible. The impact of the storm is significant, and crews are continuing to assess damage across the region,” wrote Pepco in a post on social media.
In an update Saturday morning, Pepco said 98% of people who had lost power had their service restored, with about 1,100 customers across D.C., Montgomery and Prince George’s counties still without electricity as of 5:30 a.m.
Charles McDade, a spokesperson for Pepco, said the outages were largely in Montgomery County, with about 870 people still without electricity early Saturday, followed by 130 in Prince George’s County and 120 in D.C.
Service is expected to be restored across the entire area no later than 11:59 p.m. Sunday; however, most customers are expected to have their electricity restored before then, according to Pepco. For the latest updates, click here.
